I am thankful that Sue Schell knew what she was doing when it came to lobbying in Springfield! There were hundreds of lobbyists - people from JDRF, Les Turner ALS and many other organizations. After lunch and a rally with Dan Hynes, Tom Cross, Jeff Schoenberg and Laurie Zoloff (internationally known Bioethicist and NW professor), they turned us loose on our Representatives.
The House was in session, so we joined the crowds of lobbyists on the rope line outside the House chambers. We had to be pretty aggressive but were successful in talking to many Representatives. I sent a note in to my very own (republican) representative, he came out to speak to me and reaffirmed my disgust. Toeing the party line evidently requires choosing ignorance! My Rep. explained that he would not be voting yes on the bill we were promoting (which ONLY puts stem cell research in Illinois on the ballot for voters to decide!) When I pressed him, he said it was beause he didn't believe in abortion....!!!
(Springfield, IL) March 2, 2005, 11:30 pm-- Four busses carrying nearly 400 people joined a Chicagoland coalition to lobby in support of House Bill 3815 in Springfield, Illinois today. The trip sponsored by various groups, such as Hadassah and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, worked in conjunction with Illinois Controller Daniel Hynes’ staff to organize this historic Lobby Day for Stem Cell Research.
Together, our group successfully spoke to many state representatives on both sides of the aisle, asking them to vote “yes” on HB 3815, in order to bring disease-ending research to Illinois!
